Leaning Tower of Pisa

“Leaning” Tower of Pisa was built in 1173 to serve as the cathedral`s bell tower.  Soon afterward the construction it started to lean that’s why it is popular by the name of Leaning Tower of Pisa. The tower is lean towards one side because it was built on soft ground. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most notable architectural structures of medieval Europe and a popular tourist destination of Italy.

The Pisa Tower is one of the four buildings that make up the Cathedral complex in Pisa. The tower took almost 344 years to build because the construction was stopped a couple times due to war. The Leaning Tower of Pisa becomes a UNESCO World Heritage Site 1987. Major restoration work has been done during 1990 and 2001 to stabilize the tower.

The tower has 8 storeys and it is 60 meters tall weighing around 14,600 metric tons. The Bottom story of Tower consists of 15 marble arches and the next six storeys have thirteen arches that surround the tower, and the final story has 16 arches seven bells, each representing one note of the musical scale.
